Take one composer from that great era of American popular song and a handful of superior singers of standard songs and it must be a recipe for a successful listening experience. In this instance the composer is Cole Porter who not only wrote the music he also provided the lyrics.
The recordings wre made during the Forties and Fifties which is a golden period for fine singing and songs. The singers range from Eartha Kitt to Peggy Lee and many others and naturally some tracks are better than others.
There are three tracks by Ella Fitzgerald with Buddy Bregman and his Orchestra taken form Ella’s Cole Porter Songbook which she reorded for Norman Granz and the ever popular “Every’time We Say Goodbye” is included.
There are a couple of tracks from Frank Sinatra’s famous album “Songs For Swingin’ Lovers”, “I Get A Kick Out Of You: and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”, There are also three tracks from the soundtrack of the film “High Society”.
There are two superior tracks by the under appreciated singer and pianist Jeri Southern with Billy May, “Let’s Fly Away ’ and “You’re The Top”.
There is such a variety of material that there must be something to please the most discerning listener although there are plenty of compilations on the market this must be one of the better ones.
