VARIOUS ARTISTS - Magic Moments 9: In The Spirit Of Jazz
ACT 9820-2
Over the last few years ACT Records have elevated themselves to a position where they are more than strongly challenging ECM as the foremost and most innovative label on the European jazz scene. It seems unfair to call their Magic Moments series "samplers", although that's what they are, but with packaging and liner notes of the exceptional high quality equal to their individual releases. Anyone with the complete set of these discs already has a more than worthwhile library of contemporary jazz, as it stands today.
Their latest addition of the series is a fine album of fifteen recordings highlighted by a symphonic tribute to the great Esbjorn Svensson by The Stockholm Philharmonic, a sensitive saxophone reading of Clapton's Tears In Heaven by Jukka Perko, a Michael Wollny / Vincent Peirani piano and accordion duo on The Kiss, plus a striking new trio version of Kenny Barron's Voyage by the Iiro Rantala trio featuring Lars Danielsson and Peter Erskine.
The full play list is:
From Gagarin's Point Of View, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Lycklig Resa, Jan Lundgren
Sleep On It, Joachim Khun La Maga, Gregory Privat Trio
Folksong, Marius Neset The Kiss, Michael Wollny duo
Mirlo, Gerado Nunez Simple Song, Nils Landgren
Tears In Heaven, Jukka Perko Waltz For The Lonely Ones, Victoria Tolstoy
The Call, Lou Tavano Voyage, Iiro Rantala Trio
The Soul, David Helbock St James Infirmary, Eric Bibb
Kristallen Den Fina, David Hellbock
