TOINE THYS TRIO - Grizzly
Igloo Records – IGL260
Toine Thys, composer: clarinet, soprano sax, tenor sax; Arno Krijger, organ; Antoine Pierre, drums
This is an album full of variety: heady airs, lively interactions between sax and organ along with swaggering solos. Thys is particularly motivated and swings between tenor and soprano with penetrating élan, while Krijger’s Hammond establishes the disposition of the groove, the drive from the drummer accentuating the fiery, rhythmic sense.
The whole album leans towards a certain sensory vein, corporeal rather than cerebral, and this sensation is heightened by the mood introduced by the bass clarinet. It’s a delightful though rather brief interlude and while never intense, it is neither trivial nor insubstantial. It is thoroughly enjoyable.
