SARAH THORPE - Deep Blue Love
Dot Time Records DT9087
Sarah Thorpe/ Vocals and Production, Oliver Hutman/ Piano, Darryl Hall/ Bass, John Betsch/ Drums
with guests T.K.Blue/ Reeds, Josiah Woodson/ Trumpet and Flugelhorn, Ronald Barker/ Trumpet and Vocals and Ismael Nobour drums on one track.
Sarah Thorpe was born near Paris to an English mother and French father; she grew up in France (with occasional trips to Yorkshire!) and singing was a passion for her and according to her website she has gigged extensively in Paris and London and her studies with the likes of Daniela Barda, Sara Lazarus and, most importantly, the unique Michele Hendricks. Her studies have paid off and having paid her dues in the bars and restaurants later played with Jason Marsalis, Kirk Lightsey, TK Blue and Darryl Hall (the latter two appearing on this her second CD.)
Her selection of songs is exciting and varied including 4 originals, as well tunes by Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter and Horace Silver amongst others. The backing band is tight as you might expect from its makeup with the addition of special guests are some tracks.
Sarah is a new voice to me, but one whose career I shall now follow with interest. I have seen it suggested elsewhere that she might have been influenced by Stacey Kent ( no mean compliment), but I am not so sure, she certainly seems her own woman and although it can sometimes be an old cliché, I believe she is destined for great things.
