RUTA DI - Hooligan
Self Release (download only)
Ruta Di (vocals, guitar)
This is the debut album from neo-soul/jazz/funk singer and guitarist Ruta Di, a Lithuanian ex-pat in London. As a child she was encouraged to play classical piano by her mother when aged just 6, switching to guitar in her teens. She went on to study jazz guitar at the Music Conservatoire in Lithuania.
Since graduating and moving to the UK she has focused her energies on writing her own songs and performing in and around London.
The first track, 'Unconditionally' is a ray of sunlight on a rainy day. Utilising wordless singing aplenty throughout the album, Ruta Di accompanies herself on guitar. As this is a review from Spotify without liner notes, it isn’t possible to ascertain whether she is playing and singing on the recording simultaneously but there are some tasteful solo sections in here from guitar and bass guitar.
The feel of the final track, 'Let You Go', is Ruta’s sole departure from the other album tracks’ loose funk-beat formula, and features voice and piano in melodic unison.
The album is available to download on Bandcamp and for streaming on Spotify and iTunes now.
