NEW ORLEANS BRASS BANDS - Through The Streets Of The City

Smithsonian Folkways Recordings SFW CD 40212

Rating 3/5

Featuring: Liberty Brass Band; Treme Brass Band; Hot 8 Brass Band; Recorded New Orleans date Unknown

This style of music began in the early Twentieth Century in New Orleans and have been a part of the fabric of the social life for over a hundred years. Although not strictly jazz it’s as near as makes no difference.

Although this is music is from a past era these recordings are bang up-to-date. There are three bands involved on this album, two of them involve some of the older generation or descendents of the older players. The third band The Hot 8 Brass Band is comprised of younger musicians and has a more funky style but retains many aspects of the older bands.

These bands are very much a tourist attraction in New Orleans appearing in street parades and at festivals.

There is enough variety in the three bands to retain interest during the sixty eight minutes of the album and although you may think it is not your bag it is good honest fun and there is a great deal of pleasure to be derived from it.

This is a good album to banish the winter blues and as such is a worthwhile purchase.
