LYN STANLEY - The Moonlight Sessions
AT MUSIC LLC 305
Lyn Stanley (v); Mike Garson, Tamir Hendleman, Christian Jacob (p); Chuck Berghofer (b); Joe LaBarbera, Ray Brinker, Bernie Dresel (d); John Chiodini (elg); Rickey Woodard (ts); Chuck Findley (t); Bob McChesney (tb); Corky Hale, Carol Robins (harp); Hendrik Meurkens ( harmonica); Louis Conte (perc)
Taking a selection of the Great American Songbook’s finest, Lyn Stanley sings with a strong, personalised vocal style. She is husky and intense on 'All Or Nothing At All' riding easily on top of the free flowing rhythm section. Findley has a crisp piano solo and the guitar of Chiodini is also heard to advantage. The 'Rhapsody in Blue' ending is cute. 'Willow Weep For Me' is one of the very best tracks on the album, Woodard’s blues based tenor sax sets up the vocalist for an intense, emotive vocal performance. Woodard is front and centre in accompaniment throughout on this one, his lines enhancing a very good vocal.
'Moonlight Serenade' isn’t done much these days except for Glenn Miller revival bands but is here given a lush, slow ballad treatment. One of the pianists, unidentified on the sleeve notes, provides a smooth backing and there is a warm flugel solo from Mr. Findley. All of the selections here are very well sung and the accompaniment throughout is ideal.
This CD is one of the Super Audio variety the sleeve information informs me and the sound is extremely good. Maybe this product sounds best if you have a Super Audio player but I can report that on a common or garden Sony Player it sounds great. Mind you, you also need really good amp and speakers but this is one of the best compact discs I’ve ever heard as far as sound balance goes. It all helps the music and a singer as good as this, with the sort of sympathetic backing she receives here, makes for a thoroughly enjoyable session.
