LE BRUIT DES DOFS - La Combinatorique
Circum-Discs CD MICROCIDI020
Jean-Louis Morais : Guitar & Compositions; Olivier Verhaege : Bass; Charles Duytschaever : Drums
Recorded from February 20 to 23, 2017
Combinatoriques is that branch of mathematics which is about counting - and in many different ways, sets and structures included. From the 17thC onwards (Blaise Pascal) it was developed from ancient Indian, Arabian and Greek mathematicians’ theories and became applicable in other areas of mathematics, including coding, cryptography, graph theory and probability. New uses in computer science and systems management have seen its importance increase in recent years.
The album, La Combinatorique, is a melange of genres, sounds and stories and there is no doubt that the trio, Le Bruit Des Dofs, has analysed the possibilities of combining sets and structures before applying them to its music. The result is an unconventional form of jazz that leans towards experimental rock music styles or forms from the early 70s, not excluding metal or psychedelic rock. The music is also redolent of the Avant-rock of the 80s and 90s.
This is a very tight trio, hardly surprising as they have played together for many years and know each other very well. The consciously electric line-up keeps them on the central thoroughfare between jazz and rock, while the intricacies of their configurations are by no means allowed to exclude or inhibit the potential and freedom of improvisation.
The whole is an intricate piece of compositional engineering that encourages me to look forward to their next project.
