A Women In Jazz Media Podcast

Written by Ashaine White

First of all… Happy International women’s Month! Take some time this month to support, enjoy and share the amazing content, artwork, writing and music that women have provided and continue to provide to the medium of Jazz Music!

In celebration of International Women’s day, I had the pleasure of sitting down with the inspiring, Angélika Beener, for this month's episode of “In Conversation with…” hosted by JazzTribes.network.   Born and raised in New York, Angèlika has a vast amount of knowledge and experience in everything Jazz, from working with labels such as Blue Note Records, consulting independent artists and non-profit organisations to winning awards for her contributions and impact, and even hosting a podcast of her own, you name it she has conquered it!

Angélika’s earliest memories are full of music and storytelling, growing up around musicians and a music-filled house influenced her love and passion for all things music and she knew writing about music was what she was destined to do. After working in Radio and Marketing, Angélika’s turbulent pregnancy inspired her to work on a freelance basis, working on her own blog: Kultured Child and contributing in any way she could.

Being a black woman in Jazz Media has contributed to the work that Angélika does today, her experiences working in a white male-dominated space are paramount to the issues that women, and specifically black women face working in the Jazz music business sector.

Inspired by Arsenio Hall, Angélika’s out of the box, informed and poetic writing focuses directly on commenting, exploring and understanding the impact of Jazz music on society, and society’s impact on Jazz, “broadening the Jazz perspective” for all.

We discuss the lack of diversity in Jazz Journalism and Labels, making space for lesser represented women and people of colour in the industry, what makes an effective interview and more in this month's episode of “In Conversation With…”!
