GARY ALESBROOK - Take Five No: 69

Can you tell us about your new album?
The Stories We Tell Ourselves is a collection of original songs that convey ideas of love, loss, relationships and identity. Stories reflecting on the past and recognising how our perceptions often change with insight and experience. From the flush of young love, to the challenges of staying authentic in our ever changing and fast paced world, these are themes that are universal to us all. From the lighthearted nature of songs like “Key Lime Pie” and“Just One More Thing,” to the heart-breaking story of a “Fallen Star,” I think there is a message here for all.
What other projects are you currently involved in?
I’ve taken a break from touring to concentrate on studio projects. I’m recording albums for various artists around the world and I record from my home studio in Bristol. I have just finished recording trumpet on the new Raul Midón album. That was amazing, there are some incredible musicians on that one. I feel very honoured.

What are you currently listening to and what was the last CD or download you bought?
As I type this I am listening to “Brownie Speaks: The Complete Blue Note Recording.” The last CD I bought was at the launch of an incredible Bristol Violinist, John Pearce. His debut album is called “Just Friends” and swings really hard. Go and check it out.
What is your all time favourite album and why?
This is a tough one as so many different kinds of music hit you at different times in your life and effect you in different ways. I have to say, I bought D’Angelos “Voodoo” Album when it came out in 2000 and it changed the way I played from then on. It made me think about groove, swing and pocket. These are the most important things for me when I hear music.
Who has caught your attention recently that we should be listening out for?
I’ve been addicted to instagram over the last year and discovered some great musicians. Go and check out trumpet player Tony Glausi from New York. He’s got such a great feel to his playing, very remisicant of Wynton.
