FREAKSON - Tales

Auand Records CD AU5022

Yuri Nocerino – alto and soprano saxophones; Alessandro Vasconi – piano, keyboards; Mirco Capecchi - double bass; Gianni Apicella – drums
Recorded at FreakSon's Homestudio in 2020

The Tuscany based band, FreakSon, was originally formed in 2014 as a dectet (10-piece) which changed after its first album release.  Founded by drummer Gianni Apicella, it reduced to a quartet in 2019 and Apicella concentrated the band’s output around improvisation, invention and investigation.  This new quartet is instituted as saxophonist Yuri Nocerino, pianist Alessandro Vasconi, Mirco Capecchi on double bass and Gianni Apicella on drums.

Apicella points out that the band has worked together, all contributing to composition for example.  So, while the drummer wrote a melody for The Warrior, the harmony was generated by the pianist and this process could be switched for other tracks.  Sometimes, the rhythm took the lead, Capecchi and Nocerino delineating the theme and the visual conception of each musical keynote.

Gianni has also suggested that while categorisation of the band’s music is not easy, it could perhaps be located in a genre like that of a progressive jazz band, whose music may be associated with that recorded to accompany and to synchronise with cinematic images, television programmes and video games.  FreakSon is vacillating between Prog-Rock, to Neo-Soul and Jazz

Tales was imagined during the Covid pandemic and influenced by its physical and emotional outcomes.  The situation gave the band large amounts of time in which to record tracks and mix them, to learn how to use the audio software and they are pleased to say that the whole thing sounds as they intended.  That is a huge success.
