Can you tell us about your new album?
I’m very proud of this new album Atlântico, with Renaud Dardenne, Alexandre Tripodi and Cédric Raymond, all very good musicians with whom I can collaborate very well and not just Django style. It’s a mixture of great compositions from all of us with also one or two collaborative compositions. The music is eclectic and represents the wide range of interests of the musicians. One composition was written for a film, and so has very visual elements. There is some improvisation but the root of the album is not jazz in a traditional sense. Mostly it is a collection of great melodies, moving in many directions and that is refreshing for me.

The sound nice and natural. Which is also satisfying for me as I can listen without always wishing we'd worked harder on the sound.

What other projects are you currently involved in?
I recorded an album in Paris in 2018 for a new project with New Orleans clarinetist Evan Christopher. The project represents the meeting of jazz expressed from two different cultures and is called A Summit in Paris. European jazz is represented by myself, Dave Kelbie and Sebastien Girardot, and from across the Atlantic, one of the great New Orleans musicians, Evan Christopher.
I’m also always busy with a number of Roma projects in the community.

What are you currently listening to and what was the last CD or download you bought?
At the moment I’m listening to mostly Chopin and some Bach. I’m really interested to take some classical music, specifically waltzes, to play in my own way.

What is your all-time favourite album and why?
Django’s recording in Rome. He plays differently, he’s searching around, not only for some more modern ideas, but experimenting with the sound, and about searching Another is the 1942 Brussels recording with Stan Brenders and his Grand Orchestra … amazing arrangements.

Who has caught your attention recently that we should be listening out for?
Branko Bako Jovanovic from Belgrade. A fantastic guitarist, musician.
