Recorded at Bexley, Kent 2015
This is a musical memoir by singer Eddie Toal for his wife Irene who died of breast cancer in 2011 and all proceeds from the recording will be donated to the Beatson Cancer Charity.
When reviewing this kind of album it is difficult to be critical but in this case there is no need to be wary as a glance at the line up is enough to give confidence..
There must be a number of singers in the provinces who command a following in their local area but never make it beyond that. Eddie Toal is possibly one of that number but he has a fine voice though it is his personal approach to familiar material thay sets him apart from the general run of this type of singer.
Apart from one self penned song and another which is well known all the other material on this album are tried and tested standards which appear on many albums by this typee of singer.
Eddie Toal must have honed this material to this standard at his many live gigs and he must have given a great deal of thought to his personal approach to the material.
The opening number “Someone To Watch Over Me” is given the usual ballad performance and Eddie is backed by some sensitive piano by Brian Dee and sympathetic obligatos from Bruce Adams on trumpet.
Edie Toal’s approach to the standard “The Way You Look Tonight” is to give it the latin treatment which turns it into something a little different and Eddie’s phrasing also contributes to making this a memorable track.
Eddie’s own composition “You’re the One For Me” is one of those songs which just carries you along with it and must go down well in his live performances.
“My Funny Valentine” opens with just Eddie and Simon Thorpe’s bass before launching into a hard swinging interpretation instead of the usual heart rendering version of the song. Brace Adam’s fiery solo adds lustre to the track.
The slightly latin feel is also present on “I Will Wait For You” with Jim Mullen’s guitar much in evidence backing the singer and Bruce Adams coming up with his finest solo of the album.
Both Eddie Toal and the musicians contribute in making this a successful album with good songs and interesting solos.
If you purchase this release not only will receive an enjoyable album you will be contributing to a good cause as all the the proceeds from this album will be donated to the Beatson Cancer Charity.
