DOC CHEATHAM & SAMMY PRICE - Duets & Solos
Sackville SK2CD-5002 - 2 CD Set
Doc Cheatham ( tpt ) Sammy Price ( pno )
Recorded CD One 1979 & CD Two 1976
Adolphus Anthony Cheatham ( Doc ) was born in Nashvillei 1905 he was very much a veteran at the the time of this recording in 1976 and 1979. Athough this is an advanced age for a brass player he acquits himself pretty well.
He played played with various big bands at an early age including Wilbur De Paris, Chick Webb and Sam Wooding whom he travelled with to Europe in 1928 returning to the USA in 1930 agin working with big bands including Cab Calloway, Teddy Hill and Benny Carter. He returned to Europe in 1957 with Wilbur De Paris whilst there he also worked with Sammy Price and Herbie Mann. He again returned to the USA and formed his own band in 1960 before joining the Benny Goodman band in1966 for two years. He continued to work with big bands but but worked with small groups as a freelance until the late Eighties.
Pianist Sammy Price started out as a dancer before forming a big ban and in 1945 and 1947 he recorded with Mezz Mezzrow and Sydney Bechet also playing at the 1948 Nice Jazz Festival. In the early 1950’s he lived in Dallas where he owned two clubs he then returned to New York working with a variety of musicians spending some time working in Europe. On the present two CD Set these two musicians working as a Duo and a solo pianist had a lifetimes experience between them it is therefore not surprising that they worked so well together.
The solo Piano tracks are the most interesting and on tracks like “Aunt Hagurs Blues” and “A Hundred Years From Today” Sammy Price is at his most masterful and inventive.
As a Duo they are both supportive and complementary particularly note the interplay on “Honeysuckle Rose2
If you enjoy solo piano and Duos you will find much to admire on these two Cds and anybody who would like to acquaint themselves with this style of jazz will not be disappointed.
