Joe Zawinul joined the Cannonball Adderley Quintet in 1961 and stayed with the Quintet for ten years,, Joe wrote “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” for the Quintet which they recorded in 1966. In 1970 Joe Zawinul along with Wayne Shorter formed Weather Report which was greeted with critical acclaim, Joe wrote “Birdland” for the group which became something of a hit.
Tracks 1 to 5 on CD One are by the Quintet and the first two tracks, !One Man’s Dream” and “Unit Seven” have little to recommend them but track on track three, “Never Say Yes” a Nat Adderley original the Quintet comes to life with some muted cornet by the composer which sets the tone for the number followed by some inspired alto by Cannonball. “I Can’t Get Started” has some heartfelt Cannonball with some delicate accompaniment by Joe Zawunil plus a beauty of a solo.
The seven tracks with vocals by Nancy Wilson give a nice balance to the album with the most successful track being “The Masquerade Is Over” which is notable for the sympathetic piano playin of Joe Zawinul. Nancy Wilson has a tendency too be a little strident at the climax of a number but if the listener can get over that these tracks have plenty of fine moments.
The final three tracks on CD One are given over to the Quintet and are taken from the Jazz Casual television series and the recording has an empty studio quality about it. Louis Hayes are a little more forward in the mix but this is not a problem because he is playing so well. All three tracks have something of value and should not be overlooked.
eAll the tracks on CD Two but two feature singer and alto player Eddie ’Cleanhead’ Vinson and is better listened to in small doses but reasonable alto player but there is little variety in his programme. The final two tracks feature a little known singer and is probably better left that way.
The redeeming factor is that the Quintet play pretty well on the whole of CD Two which make up for some of less interesting aspects.
This album has it’s high and low points but there is enough fine playing by the Quintet to make it a worthwhile purchase if not an essential one.
