Julian ‘Cannonball’ Adderley caused something of a minor sensation when he first burst on to the scene appearing on the Kenny Clarke album “Bohemia After Dark”. His style owed much to Charlie Parker but there was much to admire of his own freewheeling approach to the alto saxophone.
He made just one album for Savoy before moving recording companies and these recordings were fine but it was not until he moved again to the Riverside label that he became a force to be reckoned with and the three albums on this release are from that period. The style of the Quintet is Hard Bop with a Soul influence with a dash of Gospel which was a style being used by a number of musicians of the period and was popular with the general jazz public.
The first album on this set is “The Cannonball Adderley Quintet live in San Francisco” which was recorded at the Jazz Workshop, the first number on the album is “This Here” which was composed by the pianist on the album Bobby Timmons who was to have a great influence on the style of the Quintet. This is a jazz waltz with the influence of soul church music apparent in both the solos and the statement of the theme. The presence of an audience and Cannonball’s amusing announcements add to the atmosphere. Also on this album is “Bohemia After Dark” which Cannonball first recorded on his debut with the Kenny Clarke group and is taken at much faster tempo by the Quintet and does not quite capture the quality of Oscar Pettiford’s composition.
On the second album, “Them Dirty Blues” Bobby Timmon’s follow up to “This Here” which is titled “Dat Dere” is to be found and follows very much the same pattern.which has bassist Sam Jones driving the front line on. One of the Quintets most popular numbers “Work Song” written by brother Nat and Oscar Browne Jr. is the highlight of the album with exciting solos by both Cannonball and Nat, Barry Harris is the pianist on this track and is solo is one of his finest. The Gershwin’s “Soon” opens with Nat’s muted cornet with is free flowing and inventive but it’s Cannonball’s highly charged contribution that is the highlight of the track.
On the third album “Live at the Lighthouse” Victor Feldman takes over the piano chair and the opening number “Sack O’ Woe” is another of Cannonball’s soulful compositions and it is Victor Feldman’s piano solo which catches the attention of the listener. Frank Rosolino’s waltz “Blue Daniel” is one of those numbers which lodges in your memory which you find yourself humming long after the track has finished, and again it is Victor Feldman’s piano solo which captures your attention.
This release contains three albums of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet’s best work and it is a bonus to have them all collected together.
