Audrey Silver ( vocal ) Bruce Barth ( pno ) Paul Beaudry ( bass ) Lewis Nash ( drs ) Alex Pope Norris
( tpt ) Gary Versace ( accordian ) Ron Affif ( gtr ) Tom Beckham ( vibes )
New female singers seem to appear every other week and then disappear as fast without really making any lasting impact on the musical scene. The must obviously be venues where these singers can ply their trade but is there enough work available to sustain this onslaught?
Although she has surrounded herself with jazz musicians there is little evidence of jazz feeling in her vocalising and she doesn’t fall in to the category of a show singer so it is difficult to place where she is coming from.
Her repertoire on this debut album is a mixture of well worn standards and more contemporary material plus a smattering of original compositions where she has had some input.
The backing group provide sympathetic accompaniment and in particular the pianist Bruce Barth cannot be faulted.
Bill Evans’ “Very Early” a better than average tune deserves a much more sympathetic reading but on this occasion the singer falls short.
Audrey Silver has no doubt some talent but I am not sure where it should be channelled but I would not say it was jazz talent.
There must be people out there that listen to singers of this persuasion but I am not sure where.
