ANEMOCHORE - Suites And Seeds

Creative Sources Recordings CD CS 593

Frantz Loriot, viola; Sebastian Strinning, tenor saxophone, bass clarinet; Daniel Studer, bass; Benjamin Brodbeck, drums.
Recorded by Jean-Marc Foussat at WIM Zurich, October 24th 2018

Anemochore - an organism that is spread by wind, as a plant with wind-borne seeds - a plant that has seeds or spores adapted to distribution by wind – and so it seems here that the musicians have chosen Anemochore as allegory for their collaboration.  There is a parallel too in the mind’s eye between that notion and the soft, sequestering sounds of the instruments as they set about their singular improvising: restive, agitated even.

The music is rich, but to get the best of it you may need to increase your playback volume, as it really has been minimised.  Don’t overdo it, as this would generate distortion.  Better to ensure your highest level of concentration, maximum focus, to gather the fullest harvest of improvised exchanges.

Each of the instruments is acutely cognisant of the group’s cooperative equilibrium, all taking and enjoying an equal stake.  The band is a Swiss group, formed in 2016 by Loriot and Studer to investigate new playing systems and systems of improvisation.  They deliver a consummate performance of unpretentious, free-playing, skin-tight music.
