JOHN FEDCHOCK - Reminiscence
SUMMIT RECORDS (no number listed)
John Fedchock (tb); John Toomey (p); Jimmy Masters (b); Dave Ratajczak, Billy Williams (d)
Recorded August 2013 & March 10th 2012
Trombonist Fedchock released a CD called Fluidity in 2015. This follow up session features tracks that were left over from the earlier session. They are not, however, inferior pieces but all are top drawer tracks consisting of four standards and three by the leader. Fedchock is a sprightly performer on slide trombone, his lines soaring brightly over the rhythm section. The Third Degree, his opening composition, is a medium tempo swinger. Loose Change is slower but again shows how comfortably he gets round the trombone with inventive lines all through a long solo outing. Toomey is a blues based pianist and his solo runs add extra interest to the proceedings. Bassist Masters gets a good solo work out on Loose Change.
There is a slow and luxurious version of J. J. Johnson’s Lament where Fedchock gets to show his lyrical side. Popular but not overworked standards such as End Of A Love Affair, You’re My Everything and Tadd Dameron’s jazz standard If You Could See Me Now also receive the romantic lyric treatment. Toomey’s flowing single line solo on Lament is a highlight. Drummer Williams only appears on Brazilian Fantasy a track from an earlier session. The group have a very together sound which comes from being in a regular group for some time and the audience appreciation registers on this live set with enthusiastic applause for a very gifted trombone soloist and his highly compatible sidemen.
